A Pacific Flag Rich in Polynesian Symbolism
Celebrate the culture and maritime heritage of the South Pacific with this French Polynesia Flag for indoor and outdoor use. Its traditional red and white bands surround a detailed central emblem featuring a Polynesian canoe, the ocean and a radiant golden sun.
The flag is made from durable 115 g/m² polyester and finished with reinforced edges and double-stitched seams. Two rust-resistant brass grommets provide a convenient way to attach it to a flagpole, balcony, wall or suitable display stand.
The Story Behind the French Polynesia Flag
The present flag of French Polynesia was officially adopted on 23 November 1984, during an important period in the development of the territory’s internal autonomy. Its design was created by Alfred Chalons, a technology and visual arts teacher who entered a public competition with the support of his students.
The red, white and red arrangement was inspired by the historic flag of the Kingdom of Tahiti. The white central band is twice as wide as each of the two red bands, providing space for the distinctive emblem of French Polynesia.
A Canoe Connecting Five Archipelagos
At the centre of the flag is a double Polynesian canoe viewed from the front. Five stylised human figures, often described as tikis, represent the five archipelagos of French Polynesia: the Society Islands, Tuamotu Islands, Gambier Islands, Marquesas Islands and Austral Islands.
Ten golden rays rise behind the canoe and symbolise the sun and life. Below the vessel, five rows of blue waves represent the Pacific Ocean and its abundance. Together, the elements honour traditional navigation, the unity of the islands and the importance of the sea to Polynesian life.

Display Polynesian Culture and Island Heritage
This French Polynesia flag is a meaningful choice for Polynesian cultural festivals, Pacific Island events, traditional dance performances, maritime exhibitions, schools, travel businesses and international flag collections. It can also be displayed by people from Tahiti and the surrounding archipelagos who live abroad and want to maintain a visible connection with their island heritage.
The colourful canoe emblem makes the flag particularly suitable for cultural centres, restaurants, tourism displays, boats, clubs and educational presentations about the islands of the South Pacific.
Care Instructions for Outdoor Display
Allow the flag to fly freely without rubbing against walls, branches, cables or rough surfaces. Take it down during storms, extreme weather and very strong winds. If it becomes wet, allow the flag to dry completely before folding and storing it.
