A Flag Adopted on the Road to Independence

In 1959, while Gabon was an autonomous republic within the French Community, the country used a flag featuring green, yellow and blue together with the French Tricolour in the upper corner. As full independence approached, the design was revised to remove the French canton and give the three horizontal bands equal prominence.

The present flag was adopted on 9 August 1960, only eight days before Gabon officially gained independence on 17 August 1960. The change created a simple national emblem that reflected the country’s geography and independent identity.
