A National Flag Shaped by the Gambia River
Display the national colours of The Gambia with a durable flag suitable for homes, gardens, balconies, schools, cultural organisations, sporting events and national celebrations. Manufactured from 115 g/m² polyester, the flag combines a bright print with reinforced construction for indoor and outdoor display.
The design features horizontal red, blue and green bands separated by two narrow white stripes. At the centre is the blue band representing the Gambia River, the geographical feature that flows through the country and gives it its name.
From British Colony to Independent Nation
Before independence, The Gambia used a British Blue Ensign bearing the colonial emblem. A completely new national flag was prepared as the country moved towards independence from the United Kingdom.
The winning design was created by Gambian accountant Louis Thomasi. It was first raised on 18 February 1965, the same day The Gambia became an independent country. Unlike many national flags introduced in Africa during this period, its colours were not based on those of the country’s leading political party.
The flag also remained unchanged during the Senegambia Confederation between The Gambia and Senegal from 1982 until 1989. This continuity helped establish it as an enduring symbol of Gambian identity.
What Do the Colours of the Gambia Flag Mean?
- Red: The tropical sun and the savanna landscape.
- Blue: The Gambia River, which runs through the centre of the country.
- Green: The forests, agriculture and fertile land supporting the Gambian people.
- White: Peace and unity between the country’s people and communities.
