The German Empire later used black, white and red, but black, red and gold returned as the national colours of the Weimar Republic in 1919. In 1949, Article 22 of the Basic Law established them as the colours of the Federal Republic of Germany.

East Germany initially used the same tricolour before adding its state emblem in 1959. Following reunification on 3 October 1990, the plain black, red and gold flag became the national flag of the united Germany.
