A Flag Created for Ghanaian Independence

The national flag was designed by Ghanaian artist, teacher and sports administrator Theodosia Salome Okoh. Her design was adopted on 6 March 1957, the day Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule and the former Gold Coast became the independent nation of Ghana.

Okoh selected the Pan-African colours of red, gold and green and placed a solitary black star at the centre. The design became an influential symbol during the era when many other African countries were preparing to gain independence.

Between 1964 and 1966, Ghana temporarily used a variation in which the central gold band was replaced by white. The original red, gold and green design created by Theodosia Okoh was restored in 1966 and remains Ghana’s national flag today.
