Landkreis Esslingen Flag - Imperial City Heritage and Teck History

Celebrate the identity of central Baden-Württemberg with the Landkreis Esslingen flag. Its black and yellow colours and detailed coat of arms unite the traditions of Esslingen and Nürtingen, two historic areas that became part of the present district in 1973.

This product represents Landkreis Esslingen, an administrative district, rather than only the city of Esslingen am Neckar. It is a meaningful choice for residents, former residents, regional associations, collectors and anyone with a connection to the Neckar Valley, the Filder region or the foothills of the Swabian Jura.

A District Created from Esslingen and Nürtingen

The modern Landkreis Esslingen was established on 1 January 1973. It was formed from the former districts of Esslingen and Nürtingen, with the exception of Grafenberg. Its territory was adjusted again in 1975 through the incorporation of Leinfelden and Musberg during the municipal reorganisation.

The administrative centre is Esslingen am Neckar, a city with roots as a Free Imperial City. The wider district includes the Neckar and Fils valleys, the Filder plateau and communities near the Swabian Jura. This combination of urban centres, historic towns, industrial traditions, vineyards and varied landscapes gives the district a distinctive regional character.

The Meaning of the Eagle, Horn and Diamonds

The coat of arms of the newly formed district was granted on 13 August 1975. Its design intentionally combines symbols from the former districts of Esslingen and Nürtingen:

  • The black imperial eagle comes from the heraldic tradition of Esslingen and recalls the city’s history as a Free Imperial City.
  • The golden hunting horn on the eagle’s chest represents the Counts of Urach.
  • The black and golden diamond pattern at the bottom of the shield represents the Dukes of Teck.
  • The hunting horn and Teck diamonds were previously associated with the former district of Nürtingen.
  • The district flag uses the colours black and yellow.

By bringing these emblems together, the coat of arms visually connects the two principal territories from which the present Landkreis Esslingen was created.

Made for Indoor and Outdoor Display

The Landkreis Esslingen flag is made from durable 115 g/m² polyester. Reinforced edges and double-stitched seams provide additional strength. Two rust-resistant brass grommets make it easy to attach the flag to a pole, wall bracket or another suitable display fixture.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this the flag of the city of Esslingen?

No. This flag represents Landkreis Esslingen, the entire administrative district. The city of Esslingen am Neckar has its own municipal flag and coat of arms.

2. What do the symbols on the district coat of arms mean?

The imperial eagle represents Esslingen, the hunting horn refers to the Counts of Urach, and the black and golden diamonds represent the Dukes of Teck.

3. Why does the coat of arms contain symbols from Nürtingen?

The present district was created mainly from the former districts of Esslingen and Nürtingen. The hunting horn and Teck diamonds preserve the historical identity of the Nürtingen area.

4. Can the flag be displayed outdoors?

Yes. The polyester fabric, reinforced edges, double seams and brass grommets make it suitable for normal outdoor conditions. It should be taken down during severe weather.

5. Is the design printed on both sides?

The design is printed on one side and remains approximately 90% visible in reverse on the back.
